If you’d asked me in college whether I would consider wearing a traditional white gown with a train to my future wedding, I would have arched my brow, put my hands on my hips, and scoffed, “You have got to be kidding.” What planet- and self-respecting modern woman would be caught dead in white silk, taffeta and lace — symbols as they are of the whole odious wedding industrial complex? And who says I’ll get married, anyway?

I’ve already found the dress (details of which are top-secret, although I will admit it’s white with perhaps a teensy train). The real question now is how to do the deed, because while I’ve mellowed over the years, the wedding industry hasn’t. The typical American wedding is a doozy for Mother Nature — multiple rounds of intricate dead-tree invitations, guests flown in from all over the globe, exotic foods, rental cars, and an elaborate, expensive, ethically-suspect gown worn for a grand total of eight hours, tops.

It can seem like there’s no such thing as a wedding without pomp, excess, and a cake taller than your flower girl. Isn’t the phrase “green wedding” an oxymoron?

Actually, no. Lest we forget: there’s always the original “green” wedding: throw on a cocktail dress, tie some cans from the blue bin to the back of your bike, and pedal down to the nearest courthouse. Then again, that sort of simplicity won’t work for everyone (such as, for instance, your doily-crazed Aunt Bertha).

Thankfully, the wedding world is a lot wider than it used to be, and it’s perfectly possible to have an all-out soiree that still sits right with your conscience. Is Drinking 8 Glasses of Water Enough?



You get a fountain of answers when asking nutrition experts whether we need to drink the oft-advised eight glasses of water each day: Eight is enough or not enough or more than enough or not even the right question.

 



“The research question has been raised whether there is actually scientific evidence for drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day,” said JoAnn Hattner, a clinical nutrition professor at Stanford University.

The best answer about eight glasses? A resounding, “It depends.”

For instance, a good number of nutritionists suggest we need a varying amount of water based on body weight. A common recommendation is to divide your weight in half and that’s the number of ounces you need each day.

Sports nutritionists will chime in, “Not so fast.” They recommend adding back 10 ounces for every half hour of daily exercise. That totals to 85 ounces a day for a 130-pound woman who takes an hour-long yoga or Pilates class. If she skips the class, then roughly a half-gallon of water will suffice.

Nutritionists agree the body needs water and fluids for optimal health. Making a point to drink water throughout the day will produce such happy results as feeling more energetic and less hungry. Water flushes toxins out of the body and keeps your organs functioning at peak levels.

To be more savvy about water consumption is to be a sipper rather than a guzzler. Here’s the problem with guzzling: If you drink too much fluid at once—say, two or three glasses in the morning—you can overload the kidneys without actually hydrating the body.

A healthier strategy is to consume eight ounces every one to two hours (a particularly good idea if you are constipated). Hydration through sipping helps the body do things like deliver an adequate blood supply to the skin.

“It’s always better to space it out,” confirmed Monique Ryan, a Chicago-area nutritionist based in Evanston.

One major bonus of spacing out your water intake: Fewer bathroom runs.

There is no exact healthy number of bathroom breaks in a day; it varies as much as our names or even fingerprints. But going more than three hours without a bathroom break during daytime hours likely means you are not drinking enough water.

On the other hand, awaking to urinate twice or more during sleep indicates you need to seek a health practitioner’s attention. Overnight frequency, especially at younger adult ages, is not to be taken lightly.

Things are more fluid

 
While eight glasses of water has been a standard goal for decades—some people “credit” the tally from the popular Dr. Stillman Diet of the 1970s—a new and welcome wrinkle is the range of beverages that nutritionists now count toward your daily hydration total.

“What’s really changed is that caffeine is not considered as severely dehydrating,” said Ryan, author of the book Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes (Velo Press). “Caffeinated drinks can count as about half water.”

That means your 16-ounce morning coffee can count as one of the recommended eight to 10 cups of water. Or half of your soda is equal to six ounces of water. It appears caffeine itself is not the diuretic agent once believed, though it does prompt most people to urinate more frequently. The result is 50 percent fluid loss.

One caveat: Some people, if they are honest about it, likely lose most of that coffee and then some to agitated bladders. They may find that drinking espresso without the milk of a latte or water of an Americano-style cuts down on personal fluid loss.

In any case, Ryan was quick to add that this reversal of thinking is “not a directive to drink caffeine.”

And certainly no practitioner recommends the excess sugar (10 teaspoons per 12-ounce serving) of regular soda or additives of diet soda.

Some consumers say they prefer soda to water because soda is colder and more refreshing than a room-temperature bottled water. One idea is to look for the newer water bottles with cores that can be frozen and then inserted to keep the water cool all day. While conclusive research proves elusive, preliminary studies show people who drink cold water will burn an extra hundred calories or so compared to individuals who consume the same amount of room-temperature water.

Carbonated drinks often hit the spot, but rather than pushing the cola button on a vending machine, consider a sparkling water with a splash of juice or fresh-squeezed lemon, lime or orange.

Equal to water

 

Jackie Berning, assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and nutritionist for several Denver-area professional sports teams, said she tells her athlete-clients that beverages such as juice, milk, soy milk and herbal teas can match water, ounce for hydrating ounce. She and other nutritionists mention provisos about juice (drink 100 percent varieties, consume only 6 to 8 ounces daily because of high caloric content, don’t use it to quench thirst) and various milks (require more work in the digestive tract than water).

A notable exception is beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks, which don’t count in the hydrating column. Research shows alcohol blocks a hormone that otherwise helps the body stay hydrated. In fact, a frequent suggestion is to consume a full glass of water for every alcoholic serving.

Ryan cautioned that consuming alcohol after exercise may also inhibit muscle recovery.

So much for the post-workout beer? Your choice, but you might reconsider having more than one.

Ultimately, each of us needs to get in the flow of our personal health and energy levels.

“You are the best judge of whether you are getting enough fluids in your day,” Hattner said. “It’s more than monitoring your thirst, [which actually becomes less reliable as a hydration alert in adulthood, compared to grade-school and teenage years]. If you are feeling lethargic, it may well be from lack of hydration.”

Let’s all drink to that, whether it adds up to eight glasses of water each day or not.

By bringing you down, they bring justification to their unhealthy behavior and keep you hooked on them.
 

2. "You just didn't understand me."

Sociopaths will do something often referred to as "gaslighting," which is when you do something that causes a negative reaction and then blame the person for their negative reaction, saying that they didn't understand what you were trying to say.
 

3. "Stop being so sensitive."

When a sociopath pushes your button and makes you mad or elicits another negative creation from you, they'll defend what they said or did by telling you you're too sensitive. You need to "toughen up." This is, of course, a way for them to excuse themselves of any guilt and keep you hooked on them.

4. "Stop being dramatic."

When a sociopath accuses you of being dramatic, you try to remove any validity from your emotions and reactions that might exist. They're simply trying to tear you down and make you second guess how it is that you actually feel.
 

5. "You're reading too much into this."

There are most definitely times that we read too deep into things and take away things that were never actually there. Sociopaths often do things to make you on edge or paranoid - really anything to make you question their motives. They do this in the hope that they can belittle your intuition and make you feel crazy.
 

6. "You'd never survive without me."

Once you've begun to deconstruct a sociopath, the baser form of their manipulation begins to surface. What they want with you isn't a healthy relationship, be it platonic or otherwise. What they want is control over you, and they control you by making you feel like you're crazy. Don't let them get away with it. You can survive without them.

For women, pituitary dysfunction causes decreased estrogen, which is linked to decreased libido, hot flashes, and mood swings.
 

2. Liver and intestinal problems

The JECFA study also allocated an ‘acceptable daily intake (ADI) not specified’ to glutamic acid and its salts. No specified daily amount was recommended by the committee so food manufacturers can add as much as they want.

Although the JECFA says they failed to confirm a connection between MSG and physical symptoms for humans, they do say that high doses of MSG resulted in elevated liver and intestinal enzyme metabolites in the blood stream.

Elevated liver enzymes may result in symptoms of nausea, fatigue, nausea, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, and mental confusion. Itching, unusual blood vessels on the skin surface, joint pain, loss of appetite, or bowel movements that are light in color may be a sign of elevated intestinal enzymes.
 

3. Mental confusion

MSG may be poisoning not just your body, but your brain. MSG negatively affects the glutamate receptors in your body. A quote from the FDA taken from Dr. Merola’s website says ‘Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s chorea.’

The two types of circulation

The circulatory system actually consists of two distinct systems that work in tandem: the cardiovascular circulatory system and the lymphatic circulatory system. Mia Harper, a licensed massage therapist at MediSpa at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, explains how the two systems work together to detox the body.

“As nutrient-rich blood travels away from your heart, it progresses through smaller and smaller tubes, called capillaries," she says. "In nearby tissue cells, nutrients and waste are exchanged. Fluid squeezed from the blood, called interstitial fluid or “lymph,” transports waste to your lymph nodes (via a series of vessels similar to veins) where the fluid is neutralized, filtered and eventually returned to the bloodstream.”

1. Cardiovascular circulation

Your heart is the power behind your cardiovascular circulatory system, pumping blood through your blood vessels, supplying every part of your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs for proper functioning. With poor circulation, not only is your blood flow impaired, compromising that blood supply, but your heart is unduly taxed. Both have negative consequences and can lead to a variety of health problems.

“Poor circulation can lead directly to heart attack, stroke, eye disease, kidney disease, and claudication (leg muscle pain or weakness that comes and goes after an activity like walking),” says Dr. David Katz, Associate Professor in Public Health Practice at the Yale University School of Public Health and director of the Integrative Medicine Center in Derby, Conn. “But poor circulation also plays a role in almost every disease, from dementia to diabetes, influenza to cirrhosis.”

2. Lymphatic flow

Your lymphatic circulatory system works directly with your cardiovascular circulatory system to keep blood and lymphatic fluid levels in balance and flush toxins out of the body. It also carries immune cells throughout the body to help defend against infections.

But your lymphatic system isn't lucky enough to have a powerful organ like the heart to keep fluid flowing. “The lymph system is stimulated by gravity, muscle contraction (exercise), hydrotherapy (alternating hot and cold water on the skin), breathing, lymph drainage therapy and massage,” says MediSpa's Harper.

If your lymphatic circulation slows or stagnates, toxins will accumulate and immune cells won’t be delivered to the areas of the body where they’re needed, causing a variety of ailments, the very least of which are aches, pains and swelling (lymph edema). This can also cause deterioration of your thymus gland, tonsils and spleen – key components of your immune system -- and weaken your body’s ability to fight infection and disease.

There are a number of easy and effective ways to improve the health of both your cardiovascular and lymphatic circulatory systems:

1. Drink plenty of water

"Circulation is vital to all of the body's functions, and water makes up a large part of blood volume," explains Katz. So make sure you drink enough water every day and don’t allow yourself to get dehydrated, causing undue taxation on your circulatory system.

But does water help flush toxins from your system? Katz explains that adequate hydration is required for adequate perfusion, which in turn is required for adequate function, detox included. "And water-soluble toxins go out with water, so adequate hydration is certainly directly relevant for kidney function."

2. Exercise regularly (both cardio and strength training)

Any activity that contributes to overall fitness will also contribute to a strong circulatory system.

    Regular aerobic activity is good for the health of your heart and blood vessels.
    Resistance training adds to muscle mass, which increases the efficiency of both cardiovascular and lymph circulation, explains Katz.

3. Eat healthy
Circulation is yet another aspect of your health that benefits when you eat healthfully. “Lymph is made up of immune cells," says Katz, "so the quality of lymph is enhanced by practices that boost immunity, including a healthy, balanced diet and weight control.“

4. Get a massage

By applying pressure to the body, massage stimulates the blood and lymph vessels, helping move the fluid along.

“Studies suggest that massage may enhance circulation in a localized manner to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and perhaps accelerate healing,” says Katz, “similar to the way that applying pressure to a tube squeezes out the toothpaste.”

5. Try manual lymph drainage therapy

By applying pressure in specific ways that target lymph nodes and vessels, a therapist trained in the lymphatic drainage therapy technique can directly target the lymph system to activate lymphatic fluid circulation and stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems.

The technique includes holding the hands flat and moving them over the body to detect and assess current lymph flow patterns, and moving them in wave-like movements to release blockages in the network of lymph nodes and vessels.

“The benefits of lymph drainage therapy include a reduction of inflammatory responses (both acute and chronic), detoxification, regeneration of tissue, and deep relaxation, to name just a few,” says Harper.

Homemade Medicinal Cannabis Oil

-Start with one ounce of dried herb. One ounce will typically produce 3-4 grams of oil, although the amount of oil produced per ounce will vary strain to strain. A pound of dried material will yield about two ounces of high quality oil.

    -Place the completely dry material in a plastic bucket.
    -Dampen the material with the solvent you are using. Many solvents can be used. You can use pure naphtha, ether, butane, or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Two gallons of solvent is required to extract the THC from one pound, and 500 ml is enough for an ounce.
    -Crush the plant material using a stick of clean, untreated wood or any other similar device. Although the material will be damp, it will still be relatively easy to crush up because it is so dry.
    -Continue to crush the material with the stick, while adding solvent until the plant material is completely covered and soaked. Remain stirring the mixture for about three minutes. As you do this, the THC is dissolved off the material into the solvent.
    -Pour the solvent-oil mixture off the plant material into another bucket. At this point, you have stripped the material of about 80% of its THC.
    -Second wash: again add solvent to the mixture and work for another three minutes to extract the remaining THC.
    -Pour this solvent-oil mix into the bucket containing the first mix that was previously poured out.
    -Discard the twice washed plant material.
    -Pour the solvent-oil mixture through a coffee filter into a clean container.
    -Boil the solvent off: a rice cooker will boil the solvent off nicely, and will hold over a half gallon of solvent mixture. CAUTION: avoid stove-tops, red-hot elements, sparks, cigarettes and open flames as the fumes are extremely flammable.
    -Add solvent to rice cooker until it is about ¾ full and turn on HIGH eat.     -Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area and set up a fan to carry the solvent fumes away. Continue to add mixture to cooker as solvent evaporates until you have added it all to the cooker.
    -As the level in the rice cooker decreases for the last time, add a few drops of water (about 10 drops of water for a pound of dry material). This will help to release the solvent residue, and protect the oil from too much heat.
   - When there is about one inch of solvent-water mixture in the rice cooker, put on your oven mitts and pick the unit up and swirl the contents until the solvent has finished boiling off.
    -When the solvent has been boiled off, turn the cooker to LOW heat. At no point should the oil ever reach over 290 degrees F or 140 degrees C.
    -Keep your oven mitts on and remove the pot containing the oil from the rice cooker. Gently pour the oil into a stainless steel container
    -Place the stainless steel container in a dehydrator, or put it on a gentle heating device such as a coffee warmer. It may take a few hours but the water and volatile terpenes will be evaporated from the oil. When there is no longer any surface activity on the oil, it is ready for use.
    -Suck the oil up in a plastic syringe, or in any other container you see fit. A syringe will make the oil easy to dispense. When the oil cools completely it will have the consistency of thick grease.

This Boozy Rum Raisin Ice Cream Has No Dairy and No Refined Sugar




If you've sworn off ice cream because a) you're avoiding sugar, or b) all that dairy gives you a bellyache, good news: This rum raisin recipe doesn't call for any refined sugar or dairy. Nutrient- and fiber-rich dates and a little maple syrup give the "ice cream" plenty of sweetness, while a combo of cashews and coconut cream create a super-creamy, rich texture. Plus, it's spiked with rum-soaked raisins, so you don't have to share it with the kids. Boom.

Rum Raisin-Date Ice Cream

Yield: About 4 cups

½ cup raisins (about 3.5 oz.)

½ cup rum

1½ cups raw cashews (about 8½ oz.), soaked overnight in the refrigerator in cold water

1 15-oz. can full-fat coconut milk

3 Tbsp. coconut oil

3 Tbsp. maple syrup

½ cup pitted dates

2 tsp. vanilla extract

¼ tsp. salt

    Place the bowl of an ice cream maker in the freezer overnight. In a small bowl, combine raisins and rum. Let stand for at least an hour (or up to overnight).
    Drain cashews; rinse with cold water. In a high-speed blender, combine cashews, coconut milk, coconut oil, maple syrup, dates, vanilla, and salt. Drain raisins; reserving rum and raisins separately. Add 3 Tbsp. rum to blender. Blend until mixture is very smooth. (You should have about 4 cups.) Taste and add more reserved rum, if desired. Cover and refrigerate liquid until very cold, at least 3 hours or up to 6.
    Pour liquid into an ice cream maker and freeze as manufacturer instructs. Transfer to a freezer-safe container, folding in reserved raisins as you go. Cover and freeze until ready to serve.

If the person you are with talks about the future, without having another person by their side to experience life with or mainly claiming it's going to happen without you, then this person is definitely not "the one" for you. The future is a hazy topic to discuss whether or not anyone's going to last that long together, however, if they talk about it as if you don't even exist in their future, then you may want to consider leaving this person immediately. They see your relationship with them as something as temporary, so why be around someone who's only planning on using you for things?


4. Emotionally Unavailable

If the person you are with seems to not want to express any of their emotions to you, they may not exactly be "the one" for you right now. These people tend to have much deeper issues going on inside of them that is making them extremely insecure about how they feel. This may be something about them that you can't exactly fix all by yourself and they shouldn't expect you to be able to fix all of the problems that are going on with them in this moment of time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, it can be pretty exhausting trying to help someone who doesn't even tell you how they feel or even know how to feel.
 


5. Still Growing Up

If the person you are with is not done growing up and still wants to act like a child, then this person may not be "the one" for you at this moment. Love does require two mature human beings that are able to understand each others wants and needs. If you are the only one who is giving any kind of effort in your relationship or you're the one who's doing all of the work in the relationship, then you may want to consider leaving this person.
